TALAL MALIK

Talal Malik (/tˤalaːl maːlik/ tə-LAL mə-LIK / Arabic: طلال ملك) is an entrepreneur, adviser and humanitarian. He is the Chairman and CEO of Alpha1Energy™ and a strategic adviser to governments, companies and institutions around the world.

As a trusted adviser, he has been recognised by seven of the G20 Head of State Offices, all six of the Royal Courts of the Arabian Peninsula, and many of the world’s leading corporations, institutions, businessmen, investors and philanthropists.

As a humanitarian, he has worked in consultation with the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary General on the promotion and institutionalisation of the Sustainable Development Goals since 2014, and prior to that worked with the United Nations in 2000.  

Early life and education

Talal Malik was born at Lindo Wing, St. Mary’s Hospital in Westminster, London, UK. He attended the English School in Kuwait, Hill House International School in London, United Kingdom and Montreux, Switzerland and Queen Elizabeth’s Boys School in Hertfordshire, UK. Talal Malik read for his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Oriental Studies at Pembroke College, University of Oxford.  

Energy Sector Career

Talal Malik is the Chairman and CEO of Alpha1Energy™, a global energy advisory, investment and development firm that focuses on the world’s current and future energy needs, specialising in traditional, renewable and innovative energy sources.

Launched in 2018, Alpha1Energy™ has benefitted from Talal Malik’s strategic advisory work at a leadership level at Saudi Arabia’s superministry, the Ministry of Energy, Industry & Minerals (MEIM) from 2016-8, the most influential institution in the $5 trillion global energy sector, and Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest company.

During this period, Talal Malik led strategic advisory on the  policy and governance transformation of Saudi Arabia’s MEIM, from its historic role in petroleum and gas to the full energy mix including renewables and nuclear energy, and across the full global energy policy ecosystem;  on policy, governance and strategic communications at MEIM during the first OPEC and non-OPEC collaboration meetings between 2016-2018, including the state involvement of Russia, leading the oil price to rise from $40 to $80 per barrel during a critically-historic period; on the conception, launch and promotion of Saudi Arabia’s historic renewable energy programme, NREP, including the first external adviser at the new REPDO, including representation at the World Economic Forum, Davos, with its future global geopolitical implications; on the state privatisation or national status championship status of Saudi Arabia’s private energy companies, valued at $300 billion; and during Saudi Aramco’s pre-IPO status to become the world’s largest company, including representation at the World Economic Forum, Davos. Talal Malik was also the senior management adviser at management consulting firm McKinsey & Company’s oil and gas practice from 2008 to 2014.

Advisory & Executive Career

Talal Malik’s current advisory work is through his company, Alpha1Strategy, which focuses on governance, strategic intelligence and influence.

His work has been recognised by seven of the G20 Head of State Offices, the G20 Presidency, the Executive Offices of the United Nations Secretary General and many of the world’s leading institutions and as corporations such as Google, Alphabet, Uber and Alibaba, energy titans such as the Saudi Ministry of Energy and Saudi Aramco, sovereign wealth funds such as the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and the Public Investment Fund and think tanks such as the Aspen Institute and the World Economic Forum, Davos.

His global thought leadership through contributions in books, articles, speeches and interviews has helped influence international policy-making on topics including the rise of China, its relationship with the Middle East and its global influence, technology disruption, the United Nations and the Sustainable Development Goals, Brexit, the election of US President Donald Trump, The World Economic Forum, Davos, and the Accession of the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.

From 2008 to 2014, Talal Malik was the Head of External Relations for the Middle East for McKinsey & Company, acting as the consulting firm’s senior management adviser based in the region and responsible for building relationships with the Royal Courts of the Gulf Co-operation Council, including the Royal Diwan of Saudi Arabia.

During this period, Talal Malik was also recognised as a Senior Business Leader by UNCTAD XII in 2013 and by the TIME-CNN-Fortune Global CEO Forum in 2010. From 2005 to 2007, Talal Malik was Correspondent and Producer for Reuters at its Global Headquarters in London, where he was responsible for the first simultaneous global release of a story across the newswire, broadcast and over the Internet in 2006.  

Humanitarian Work

Since 2014, Talal Malik has worked in consultation with the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary General on the promotion and institutionalisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including through visits to New York, USA; Beijing and Tianjin, China; Abu Dhabi and Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Jeddah, Riyadh and King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia. In 2007, Talal Malik interviewed Jeffery Sachs, the key architect of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals, following his earlier work with the United Nations in Jordan in 2000.

17 April 2018 –  The five-year anniversary of the first public speech by its Chairman and CEO, Talal Malik, in the City of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah (‘The Illuminated Metropolis’) in Saudi Arabia is commemorated, where he was was invited to speak on the topic of global corporate governance, organised under the Royal Patronage of the Emirate of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah, Saudi Arabia’s General Investment Authority (SAGIA) and Malaysia’s World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF), and attended by the former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Sri Tun Musa Hitam and the Governor of Malaysia’s Central Bank, Bank Negara. It marked the first public articulation of Islam’s maxim on corporate governance as ‘caveat venditor’ (Latin for ‘let the seller beware’), compared to the ancient Roman maxim of ‘caveat emptor’ (Latin for ‘let the buyer beware’), also marking the first time in many centuries, if not ever, that Latin would have been spoken in a public address in Islam’s second Holy City.

11 April 2018 – The Chairman and CEO, Talal Malik, addressed the 2018 edition of the distinguished Top CEO forum, co-organised by INSEAD Business School, in Saudi Arabia on the plenary session, ‘A New Era’, about the strategic future direction of economies in the Middle East, focusing on rebalancing the labour market, GDP sector composition and infrastructure.

26 February 2018 – The Chairman and CEO, Talal Malik, is honoured to be a special guest at the first Riyadh International Humanitarian Forum (RHIF), inaugurated in person by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. This marks the first event Talal Malik has attended with a monarch of Saudi Arabia. Alpha1Corp through its subsidiaries  provided strategic services at the first RHIF organised by the King Salman Centre for Humanitarian and Relief Works.

1 February 2018 – The Chairman and CEO, Talal Malik’s official photo on his historic tour of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates in February 2008,  is released to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the tour and the accession of Dubai’s Crown Prince, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammad Al Maktoum, also known as Fazza. The Chairman and CEO, Talal Malik, was honoured as the first VIP with the first aerial view of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, after it exceeded 600 metres to become the tallest man-made structure on Earth; the first aerial view of The World Islands of Dubai, the world’s largest archipelago of man-made islands, after their completion; and the first view of Atlantis, The Palm Hotel on the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai.

2 February 2008 –  The Chairman and CEO, Talal Malik, becomes the first VIP guest of the Government of Dubai to fly over, view and showcase the Burj Khalifa after it has become the world’s tallest man-made structure, the World Islands upon their completion as the world’s first man-man archipelago islands viewable from space, and the Atlantis Palm Jumeirah at its completion, on the same date as the accession of Dubai’s Crown Prince Sheikh Hamden bin Rashid Al-Maktoum.

26 December 2005 – The Chairman and CEO, Talal Malik, officially launches his real estate company in a world-wide television launch viewed by 2 million people, featuring projects such as the world’s largest building complex project and second tallest building in the world.

5 October 1998 – The Chairman and CEO, Talal Malik, commences reading for his undergraduate and Masters Degree in Oriental Studies in Arabic, Middle East and Islamic Studies, at Pembroke CollegeUniversity of Oxford, the same subject with the same tutor and at the same college as King Abdullah II of Jordan did in 1982.

1981-1998- The Chairman and CEO, Talal Malik, is educated at the English School, Kuwait, the first private school in Kuwait; Hill House International Junior School in Knightsbridge, London, UK, the first school attended by the HRH Prince Charles of Wales, making him the first heir to the British throne in a millennium to be educated outside the Royal Palace; and Queen Elizabeth’s School in Hertfordshire, established by Queen Elizabeth I  in 1573.

Birth – The Chairman and CEO, Talal Malik is born at St. Mary’s Hospital, Westminster, London, UK, where the British heir to the throne HRH Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, is born on 21 June 1982.
